PFAS Chemical of Concerns Requirement

Stockwells would like clients to be aware of a potential change in Prohibited Import Regulations for Chemicals of Concern.

There has been no statement regarding a change from Australian Border Force but Stockwells would encourage clients to keep aware of this potential adjustment to requirements. Additionally, having the shipper do a declaration on what the material contains will assist with any potential issues arising, possible example shown below.

Golden Week about to begin

Golden Week is about to begin in China and other parts of Asia and will see many factories inevitably shut down for five to seven days. This will likely lead to reduced cargo availability in the market between May 6th and 14th after the holiday.

Although shipping lines have made adjustments (e.g. sailing cancellations) to address this, pressure remains high across carriers as they strive to fill vessels post-holiday.

For any concerns,s please speak to your customer service representative or contact sales@stockwells.com.au.

UK National Holiday - 5th May

Please note that businesses in the UK will be closed on Monday 5th May 2025 for the National Holiday.

US Cargo Theft

Cargo theft is on the rise across the United States—particularly when it comes to rail transport. A recent survey named the top concern for shippers was rail delays. Some transport providers have switch to moving LCL shipments entirely by truck from Chicago to LA to reduce risk of Cargo theft, improve transit times and eliminate rail related delays.

Stockwells will continue to monitor the situation and work with clients to best mitigate the risk to shipments.

Khapra Beetle Measures | Upcoming Changes

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry have announced upcoming changes to Khapra Beetle Measures.

In summary, three key changes to khapra beetle treatments and phytosanitary certification will be introduced on 28 May 2025.

  1. Revised additional declaration on the phytosanitary certificate used to certify compliance with gas-permeable packaging requirements for treatments of high-risk plant products.
  2. Mandatory supervision by the exporting government’s National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of treatment by certain providers. A new additional declaration will be required on the phytosanitary certificate to certify compliance with this requirement.
  3. Removal of the fourth concentration sampling tube requirement for methyl bromide fumigation of sea containers.

The department has written to certifying government authorities and offshore treatment providers where possible. However, it is recommended that you engage with your suppliers and treatment providers to make them aware of the changes. Since the introduction of measures to protect Australia from khapra beetle in 2021 the department has observed ongoing non-compliance particularly with regards to offshore treatments and the use of gas-impermeable packaging. Increased monitoring and assurance will be implemented on this pathway and those that do not take the required steps to ensure effective treatments are being applied may experience disruptions to supply.

BLOG | The rise of ABN piggy backing in Australia

ABN piggy backing is a fraudulent practice where shippers move goods under the ABN of a legitimate company. This conceals the importer, often with the purpose of smuggling or avoiding paying taxes.

As AI becomes more advanced, it is more important than ever for companies to review their DDP shipments and consider recommended security measures. The following letter from the desk of Angela Gambell, Director of Stockwells, discusses the rise of ABN piggy backing and the action companies need to take.
